Smoke Control Area expansion to the whole of York

City of York Council has recently approved the expansion of the Smoke Control Area to cover the whole of the York.

The decision can be viewed on City of York Council’s website at the following link: https://democracy.york.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=733&MId=15182&Ver=4 (see item 208).

The new rules will not ban solid fuel burning across York but will require all residents and businesses to take responsibility for the fuel they burn to minimise air pollution and protect health.

The current list of exempt appliances (appliances which are approved for use in Smoke Control Areas) in England can be viewed at: https://smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk/appliances-php/appliances-phpcountryengland/

The new rules will come into effect on 1st November 2026. You can only use wood in an exempt appliance in a Smoke Control Area
